About the LMEC

Commission History

The Lafayette Metropolitan Expressway Commission (LMEC) was formed in 2003 under Act 893 during the regular session of the Louisiana Legislature. Act 893 recognizes that public revenue, including federal funding, has not kept up with the pace of the Lafayette region’s growing transportation needs. Act 893 gives the LMEC specific authority to pursue nontraditional funding sources, including toll road alternatives, to promote economic growth thereby improving the quality of life for the people of Lafayette and the surrounding parishes. It is the mission of the LMEC to supplement public revenue sources for the construction, maintenance, and operation of a safe and efficient limited-access highway system exclusively within Lafayette Parish (provisions are to be made to go outside of Lafayette Parish).
